Eyelid Surgery Q&A

What is cosmetic eyelid surgery?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of your eyelids. It can make them look tighter, smoother, lifted, and younger. Eyelid surgery reduces excess fat muscle or skin to eliminate puffy, tired-looking eyes.

Blepharoplasty is a type of cosmetic eyelid surgery that repairs droopy or sagging eyelids to improve your line of vision and self-confidence.

Is cosmetic eyelid surgery right for me?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery, Dr. Rodgers reviews your medical history and examines your eyelids. The procedure can improve facial features or your line of vision if you have:

  • Droopy upper eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Excess skin on your eyelids
  • Eyelid cancer
  • Drooping eyelid skin that impairs your vision
  • Unwanted signs of aging

Dr. Rodgers discusses your desired outcome to personalize a treatment plan and give you the best outcome. In addition to eyelid surgery, he offers brow lifts, eyelid fillers, Botox®, and facial resurfacing.

What happens during eyelid surgery?

When you arrive for cosmetic eyelid surgery, you relax in a comfortable chair. Dr. Rodgers often performs the procedure under local anesthesia and offers intravenous sedation to relax you. Because your eyelids and surrounding tissue are numb during the procedure, you don’t feel any discomfort.

Using the latest advances in technology and techniques, Dr. Rodgers gently removes excess tissue and reshapes or lifts your eyelids to make them aesthetically pleasing. After completing the procedure, he closes the incisions.

What should I expect after the procedure?

After cosmetic eyelid surgery, you rest in a recovery room for a while, but you can head home the same day. Plan to have a friend or family member drive you home. You might experience temporary blurred vision from post-surgery lubricating ointment, light sensitivity, bruising, swelling, or tenderness.

Follow your post-surgery instructions that may include icing the treatment area, avoiding contact lenses for a while, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, and wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes. Bruising and swelling associated with cosmetic eyelid surgery often subside within a week or two.

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your eyelids or droopy eyelids impair your line of vision, schedule an appointment with Rand Rodgers, MD, by phone or online to find out if eyelid surgery is right for you.
